The Importance of Multicultural Learning for Asian American Youth

Wisdom Culture and Education Organization’s number one priority will always be empowering our youth and providing them with the tools and skills to reach new heights in their current and future communities. We hope that the programs and opportunities we create help the next generation of Asian Americans embrace their heritage and gain confidence in their multicultural identity.

As we celebrate Asian Pacific American Heritage Month and the historical achievements of Asian Americans, we should also recognize the existence of misperceptions and underrepresentation of Asian Americans in this country.

It all starts with our youth and helping them become proud of their identity as Asian Americans.

Learning Heritage from an Early Age

Only through learning and listening can we become more compassionate and empathetic in our increasingly diverse country. As our children learn about their background, become proud of their roots, and are inspired by our culture's many traditions, they also come to understand the many strengths a multicultural community holds. As they grow up, they can become the agents that drive change, breaking the status quo of prejudice and discrimination to move us all towards a brighter future.

Confidence in Identity

According to a recent survey by Leading Asian Americans to Unite for Change (LAAUNCH), nearly 80% of Asian Americans say they do not feel respected and are discriminated against in the United States. The next generation of Asian Americans shouldn’t feel the need to shed their cultural identity and heritage to pursue their dreams in this country.

Wisdom Culture and Education Organization has always had a program for middle school and high school students to strengthen their leadership capabilities, but it was only until recently did we add courses and activities designed to help these young leaders discover and embrace their cultural identity.

Our CYLA leadership conference and GO-YCA program links young people with peers in their own communities so they are able to explore personal and cultural identities and practice teamwork and leadership together.

"Throughout high school, Wisdom has given me valuable opportunities to truly embrace my background and culture. It provided me an environment where it felt natural and accepted to do so, which is something harder to find in a typical school setting."

— Serena Lin

A Community of Young Asian American Leaders

Our mission is to create programs and opportunities to help the next generation of Asian American youth expand their educational horizons and excel as leaders, but excellence isn’t achieved by an individual alone. Today, community building stands at the top of our priority list.

Strength in numbers is our unspoken motto, and we’re inspired every year by the number of selfless volunteers who donate their time and energy to help our camps run successfully and assist underprivileged communities abroad. Thousands of Asian American young leaders have participated in our programs and we hope you will consider joining us and contribute to the success of our vibrant community.
